No two houses in East Beach are exactly alike. Yet they all share certain
similarities. Such as respect for regional tradition, reflected in vernacular
Tidewater architecture. Unexpected details, like hidden gardens, shuttered
porches, or Victorian trim. And always, a sense of place. A sense of permanence.
Of simplicity, and grace. And most of all, a sense of home.
All of which, of course, is completely intentional. Because East Beach
draws upon southeastern building types and town planning practices to create
a unique waterfront village rooted in regional tradition. With architectural
standards based on the traditions of Tidewater vernacular architecture,
and landscaping that is in harmony with both the buildings and the natural
environment.
Every home is built by select custom builders from the East Beach Builders
Guild, and in accordance with the East Beach Pattern Book, developed by
Raymond
Gindroz and Urban Design
Associates. Urban Design Associates recently
received an honorary award by the American Institute of Architects in Hampton
Roads for the creation of the East Beach Pattern Book. The master plan for
East Beach was developed by the world-famous urban planning firm Duany
Plater-Zyberk & Company.
Both Urban Design Associates and Duany Plater-Zyberk have been instrumental
in setting the standards for New Urbanism.
